Q-Team 1: “Molecular Doping of 2D Electronic Materials“

Unlike graphene (with a vanishing energy gap), 2D semiconductor materials, such as black phosphorus, WS2, MoS2, are presently considered "hot candidates" for electronic device architectures of "post silicon" generations. Based on our previous experience with tuning the work function of metals, graphene, and inorganic semiconductor surfaces with strong molecular acceptors and donors, we will explore to what extent the fundamental interaction between 2D semiconductors is similar to the known cases employing a surface-science approach in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) using photoemission spectroscopy.

Q-Team 3: “Investigation and characterization of p- and n-doped systems”

Electrical doping with strong molecular donors and acceptors is a key technological component to fabricate efficient and high-performing organic devices like organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) or organic photovoltaics (OPV). While the vast majority of researchers relies on ionization energy/electron affinity values measured via (inverse) photoelectron spectroscopy on thin films to choose suitable dopant/host systems, we were recently able to show that instead redox-potentials measured by cyclic voltammetry on molecules in solution provide a more reliable method to predict charge-transfer. To further investigate this topic on selected p- and n-doped systems, respectively, a Q-Team in collaboration with the National University of Singapore or Princeton University will be established, in whose framework the topic of this Master thesis is located.
